History And Facts Of Oyster Bay

The area of Oyster Bay was originally part of the colony of New Amsterdam. After the English took over the Dutch colony, the original patent for the town was granted in 1667. The Oyster Bay town was under control of English forces during most of the American Revolution.

Until the western portion of that county was amalgamated into New York City in 1898, the Oyster Bay town was originally part of Queens County and Nassau County was created in 1899. There are 40 buildings and sites presently named Town of Oyster Bay Landmarks.

The Town of Oyster Bay extends from the Long Island Sound in the north, south to the waters of South Oyster Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by the Town of North Hempstead on the northwest and Town of Hempstead on the southwest. It is the easternmost of the three towns of Nassau County, with Suffolk County, New York immediately to the east.
